Despite all the talk of having a full-time lieutenant governor in South Dakota, it appears it will be a while before that is actually so. Yankton’s very own Matt Michels is part-time until the spring, according to legislative reporter Bob Mercer:
Checking some facts for a newspaper story this fine morning, I ran across an oddity. The salary for Lt. Gov. Matt Michels is listed at $17,699. That’s about $102,301 short of what we had been told he would be getting. So I checked with Tony Venhuizen, the governor’s director for policy and communication. “He is part time until sometime this spring (May 1) as he transitions out of his law practice,” Venhuizen said. At this point Michels is still being paid at the same part-time rate that Gov. Dennis Daugaard was receiving as lieutenant governor. Like Daugaard, Michels is still showing up for work every day at the Capitol for the legislative session..
