Yeah, I saw “21 Jump Street” this weekend.
A lot of the critics are loving it, and I thought I should see if I felt the love, too.
Well, it was a mixed bag for me.
There is certainly a lot to like and laugh at with the movie (“I thought that was going to explode.”), but sometimes I think my funny bone is all out of whack.
I like comedy that challenges the boundaries of taste and sanity. I actually enjoy following comedy to places few other people are interested in visiting.
My predicament may have something to do with being exposed to Monty Python at an early age, as well as other British comedies like “Are You Being Served?”, “Ripping Yarns,” and “Red Dwarf.” But that stuff is pretty tame compared to the comedy I indulge in now — stuff like Doug Stanhope, Tim and Eric and the Tim and Eric spin-off “Check it Out! with Dr. Steve Brule.”
I just found out Friday that the second season of “Check it Out!” begins today. A witness to that moment can confirm that I squealed like a little girl for 2 minutes and 27 seconds. The last 27 seconds were the best.
I LOVE this show.
So while “21 Jump Street” is worth your time if you’re looking for some laughs, I would argue the superior option is staying in tonight and catching John C. Reilly’s inspired Dr. Steve Brule. It airs at 11:30 p.m. on The Cartoon Network.
Get off (on?) your duff and do it!
